We're excited to be adding one Floral Team Member and two Farm Hands to our staff this spring.  Please review all the relevant information below.

Position Title: Floral Team Member 

Accepting applications: January 14, 2024 through March 9, 2024

Full or part time: Part time, 18 hours per week, 3 days per week (Thursday-Saturday)

Hours: 

9am to 2pm Thursday and Friday

9am to 5pm Saturday

Occasional Sunday hours available

Seasonal or year round: Seasonal, April 4th, 2024 through October 12, 2024.  This is an at will position. 

Pay Rate: $18 per hour

Job Description: This is a dual responsibility role involving both work at Sterling Flower Farm assisting in floral design creation and work at various locations in Connecticut and Rhode Island delivering and installing floral arrangements.  The work primarily centers around wedding floral design and delivery, but may also include other types of floral design work.  Work at Sterling Flower Farm will involve simple floral design work such as preparing stems for design work, greening centerpieces, copying floral designs created by the lead florist and creating designs under the direction of the lead florist.  The Floral Team Member will also assist in loading their personal vehicle and/or the farm vehicle with finished flower arrangements.  The Floral Team Member will use their personal vehicle to deliver flower arrangements to wedding venues and other locations (no distance greater than 90 miles from Sterling Flower Farm, typically less than 90 miles).  The Floral Team Member will place and/or install floral arrangements at the location/venue, and ensure the expectations of the client are being met.  The Floral Team Member may, at times, work with other wedding vendors, such as photographers, caterers, decorators and coordinators, to ensure the vision of the client is met.  The Floral Team Member, may at times use their own judgment and decision making skills when unforeseen situations arise during a delivery, as well as their communication skills to apprise the client and the lead florist of changes.  

Essential Functions: 

Timely arrival and reliable attendance a must, especially on flower delivery days

Must be available every Saturday

Valid driver's license

Identify types and colors of fresh and dried flowers used in designs

Assist wedding florist in simple/light flower arranging

Pack flower arrangements securely for transport

Load vehicle with flower arrangements for transport

Confirm details of wedding flower order prior to transport

Accompany florist to wedding venue and help set up larger weddings

Independently deliver and set up flower arrangements using own vehicle for smaller weddings

Position Title: Farm Hand

Full or part time: Part time, 20 hours per week, 4 days per week, Tuesday-Friday

Hours: 9am to 2pm

Option to arrive to work early and finish work early on extreme heat days

Seasonal or year round: Seasonal, April 2, 2024 through September 27, 2024 OR May 7, 2024 through November 1, 2024.  This is an at will position.  

Pay Rate: $16.50 per hour

Job Description: Assist in diverse aspects of flower crop and vegetable crop production.  Tasks will include, but are not limited to, making and seeding soil blocks, transplanting crops to the field, harvesting flowers and vegetables, pruning plants, inspecting plants for pests, carrying out organic pest insect management practices, managing weeds and performing post harvest handling.  Sterling Flower Farm is a small farm that relies heavily on human-powered tools and physical labor.  Ability to spend long time periods performing tasks on the ground while squatting or kneeling is a must.  Such tasks may include, but are not limited to, digging small holes for transplants and pulling weeds.  Speed and efficiency in performing farm work are essentials to being successful in this position.  This position requires the applicant to be able to perform physical labor outdoors in all weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat.  This position requires working in a greenhouse, at times in high heat and humidity.  Must be able to lift and carry 40 pounds.  

Essential Functions: 

Dig holes using a spade

Water plants using a watering can

Apply sod staples using a mallet

Apply fertilizer to holes with a teaspoon

Harvest flowers using pruning shears

Wash buckets

Mix and measure flower preservative in buckets

Make soil blocks

Place seeds in soil blocks by hand

Cut back old crops and transport to compost pile

Other manual farm labor as needed
